Are you studying GCSE/ A Level music? Is the Music Theory going over your head?

Without an understanding of Music Theory what have you got?

How many great guitarists/songwriters do you know that guess their way through life? Do you believe that the great songs you listen to on the radio were created by people sat in their bedrooms jamming?

Maybe so! However many of the great songwriters/players have spent years studying this black art. To obtain the information required to produce the great songs which we know today.

So is it a new language that only the most technical can understand? The answer to that is No!!!

With dedication to put it into practice you too can understand this musical protocol.

Use Ahead-Music to obtain the basic knowledge and understanding to progress your own songwriting and playing abilities, also don't forget our Royal Companion The King of Music Theory and The King-Of-Chords John Rhodes! Feel free to observe his site for inspiration and influence in songwriting techniques!

With the progression of your theory knowledge you may also find the ability of Sight-Reading with your gaining knowledge of Notation.

You may find a new career of working in pro bands on cruise ships? Not an attraction? How about being able to dep for bands? There's money to be made!

So what do I need to know about Music Theory?

Well everything in music relates back to the major scale. What is a major scale and where can I find them? All major scales are created by a given formula. The formula is as follows;

Tone, Tone, Semi-Tone, Tone, Tone, Tone, Semi-Tone

This is the formula for every major scale and these can be found in the the circle of fifths. Knowing all of the major scales now allows you to build all chord types. How many chords are there? Well here is a sheet to help you build the most simple of chords. Take the intervals required to build the chords and adjust the major scale to suit.

E.g If I need to know a C major chord I would see the required intervals for a Major chord 1,3,5,7 then take these intervals from the C major scale in the circle of fifths, which would be, C,E,G and B.
Here's the C Major Scale harmonized. You will see the notes and chord types available from the C major scale. The chord types created from this major scale will be the same for every major scale.

Apart from the Major Scales what else will I need to know? Well the Modes of the Major Scale will be a requirement. On this download you will find the Modes in C major. Again however, you will find this information transferable between each Major scale. If you play you can find these downloads from the Guitar Scales and Bass Scales pages on Ahead Music.

Major and Minor Pentatonic formulas and the Blues scales handouts, are also available. This information will assist with your improvisation and also the scales will be available for all the players as soon as we have created them.
